Dette kommer dere til å gjøre

We start with looking at fine examples of batik work in the textile and traditional clothing collect that I have collected. I will explain the process and a little of how I learn and what was passed on to me by my mother.
You will then be given a piece of cloth the practice with the tools provided the mark making with the hot wax. As we gather around the small fire for the wax heating I can share with you life and insights into the local culture.
Once you feel more confident you are then offered to spend a few hours making a traditional design wax cloth. Once your pattern is completed we then move to the indigo vat where your piece is dipped into the vat of natural dye.
Lunch is then provided as the cloth absorbs the dye. If you wish to take your cloth then you are free to do so. Alternatively we will continue to dip and dry, dip and dry the cloth to make a strong dark blue tint. Your piece may be delivered to your guest house the next morning.
Other things to note
You need no crafts experience before this workshop.
This batik class is a wonderful way of spending quality time with the Hmong people and gaining an insight into our culture and craft. We welcome you to our home.

We, myself, family and community are Hmong people from this region of Northern Vietnam. Batik is a craft practiced by Hmong women and the skills are passed down through generation to generation. This area of Vietnam has a profound textile heritage as both cotton and hemp are grown, harvested, spun, woven, sewn and embroidered here to make clothes that we wear as our traditional costumes.

I am a Hmong mother and grandmother. By taking this workshop and sitting with us, in my family home, you have the chance to learn a lot about the Hmong people and other tribes of the region. The land provides us with not only the fiber but also the dyes that we use to color the cloth, predominantly indigo, which you will experience first hand in this class. I am passionate about sharing my culture with others and preserving the knowledge and craft.
