A Tour of the history of Religion in Oxford. The foundation stone of the university in the early 1200s was religion and the Friars the first teachers. It is a tumultuous history and Oxford was at the forefront of all the major religious events. Students still wear the short, black gown of the monastery. We travel through the centuries, starting with the first university building dating from 1488. On to the College where we begin the story of the English Bible and Tyndale. Then the University Church of St Mary the Virgin, where the English Reformation was played out, with Archbishop Cranmer's trial and condemnation. Here Edmund Campion sealed his fate, Queen Elizabeth 1 visited and C S Lewis gave sermons. For 20 years St.John Henry Newman preached changing the face of English Anglicanism. On to view Lincoln College where John and Charles Wesley began the Methodist movement. Then to the area of the old Jewish quarter with its extraordinary story and brilliant Hebrew scholars. A stop outside Corpus Christi College where the King James Bible was partly written by the First Oxford Company (of scholars) in 1612 . A peep at St Edmund of Abingdon, Oxford's first Saint, sitting in the garden of the 12th century church of St Peter in the East. Finishing at the site of the martyrdom of Archbishop Cranmer.

Christine

I hold the coveted Green Badge for Oxford. Gaining this involved 9 months training on the streets and both practical and written examinations. I have a degree in history from London University and have worked with history most of my adult life: writing, researching, teaching and now guiding. For three years I was a volunteer guide in the University Church of St Mary the Virgin . A vitally important building in the history of this city which has been here since 1089. I have also guided in Christ Church Cathedral so am well practiced in illuminating the story of religion in an interesting and accessible way. If I am not available my co-host Jane, who is also a trained green badge guide with expertise in the history of religion, would take the tour. It's a dramatic history that tells the story not just of Oxford but of England.

Her skal du være
