This unique three-part, 3 hours, walking tour will begin where Manhattan began - at the National Museum of the American Indian. Each part of the tour will last approximately 1 hour. This first leg of the tour will start in Lower Manhattan. Specifically, Bowling Green, where the first enslaved Africans started building the infrastructure of the city, and end at Wall St when the enslaved Africans were brought and sold.
The second leg of the tour will start in the Financial District. We will walk up Wall St to Federal Hall - a site next to a famous free African who owned and operated a famous Oyster House in 1825.
The last leg will start around the Brooklyn Bridge, including the African Burial Ground National Monument plaza.
This tour is great for groups, team-building, field trips, and it's especially beneficial for school-age children.
Depending on the mood and convenience of the group we can stop for snacks, at any time.
Each location is based on a specific chapter in my book. There will be several restroom breaks.
Please note - Finding parking is extremely difficult in Lower Manhattan. Indoor garages will cost between $35-40. I advise using public transportation or car service.

Greetings! I'm a native New Yorker, a self-published author of the book, "You Are Here - A Geographical History of Enslaved and Free Africans in Manhattan: 1613 - 1865," and a certified NYC tour guide. For the past 2 years, I've given presentations about my book at schools and community organizations. I've lived in all five boroughs of NYC, but I claim Manhattan. I've worked in Manhattan as a Paralegal for over 20 years, I was educated here, I've visited most of NYC's museums, I've partied and experienced the nightlife here, and I survived the 9/11 tragedy at the WTC. This city, past & present represents my soul's work; I would like to share my love for the city with this fascinating African American tour of NYC.

This fun-filled educational tour will cover the areas south of Brooklyn Bridge and the areas east of Broadway. Some of the sites on this tour are famous, i.e. Brooklyn Bridge, Federal Hall, Fraunces Tavern, South Street Seaport, etc. and some are lesser-known. However, out of the 20 sites, they all have a connection with African American history that few people are aware of - this is what makes this tour unique.

I enjoyed the tour a lot. I thought it was very informative and interesting. A lot was covered and it was great to learn about the history of Manhattan from the African American perspective.

We had a great tour with Larry on Thanksgiving day. We learned so much about the city that we could not have found with another tour company. Thanks so much Larry for a wonderful day!

Wow! Lawrence is super-knowledgable and engaging. He is a true expert and his passion for his subject shines through and is infectious. He was kind, caring, engaging, went at our pace, was friendly and opened our eyes to history that we had previous walked past in oblivion. Great, great tour. Highly recommend. Whoever you are, you will learn something.

This was a wonderful experience. Larry’s passion for the topic and engaging personality brought to life the untold stories and unacknowledged contributions of African Americans and the history of NYC. The time flew by and wish it could have gone longer!

What a brilliant experience! As a New York tour guide myself I was blown away by Larry and his thoughtful experience. Larry was very warm, welcoming and knowledgeable as a host, and his passion was evident for all of us to see. The Experience opened my eyes to parts of New York that I'd never seen before. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!

This is such an informative, thoughtful and game-changing tour. I will never see so many of the streets, monuments, memorials and more of lower Manhattan the same way again thanks to Lawrence - and I am very grateful for that. A must-do tour for New Yorkers and tourists alike!
