Let's discover the Jewish 7th district and enjoy the atmosphere of the Festival of Lights! We meet at Deák Square or I can pick you up at your hotel if you're in the city centre. You learn about the history of the Jewish District, past and present of the Jewish Community. I show you where was the centre of the Jewish Quarter in the 19th century. You hear the history and developement of Hungarian neologism and interesting stories from that time. You will see the "Synagogue triangle": the Kazinczy, the Dohány (largest in Europe) and the Rumbach Synagogues. I show you the Heroes’ Temple, the monument of the victims of WW2, the Martirs' Cemetery, the Tree of Life. I'll tell you the stories how people could survive in time of holocaust, I show you the Carl Lutz Memorial. Hanukkah, also known as Chanukah or the Festival of Lights is one of the most beautiful and popular Jewish festivals. During the tour you will not only see the most important and some hidden Jewish heritage sights but you will also learn the history of Hanukkah, traditions, rules of dreidel game and you can taste traditional Jewish cake.
Why do Jews light 8 candles on their Hanukkah Menorah? Would you like to know why Jews eat fatty food and a lot of cheese during Hanukkah? You can get the answers for these question if you join my walk and we can also join one of the candle lightning ceremonies.
Other things to note
The tour is available only between 22 and 30th December. We will walk outside and the weather can be chilly this time of the year. Please dress up warmly.

Hello, I'm Brigitta, an enthusiastic tourist guide, specialized in Jewish heritage, organizing private tours for small groups, I've the permission to guide inside the Dohány Synagogue. We will walk in the city like a group of friends. I put my heart and soul into these tours as a member of Jewish family, this means much more for me than just a job. During my tour I will show you not only the main and some hidden sights in the Jewish Quarter, but you will learn about the local Jewish culture, the history of Hanukkah, the traditions and you'll taste a Jewish traditional cake. You'll hear about history and present of the Hungarian Jewish community. I find it important that those who come to Budapest can find accurate and professional guidance. At the end of my tour let's celebrate together at one of the candle lightening ceremonies.

I really enjoyed going on this tour with Brigitta! She was an extremely kind, knowledgeable and well-prepared guide who shared a lot of information with me during the tour. I learned a lot more about the Jewish quarter in Budapest and the history/celebration of Hanukkah, just as I had hoped, as well as getting some helpful recommendations for restaurants and cafés along the way. At the candlelighting ceremony, she and her daughter went out of their way to translate what was being said so that i could follow along -- so thoughtful!!! I really appreciated the effort they both put in to make this tour a valuable and enjoyable experience, and to even customize it for me where they could. I wholeheartedly recommend Brigitta as a guide -- thank you, Brigitta!
